Fun Fact

Virgin Women as Rain Masters? Only in Thailand!

Source: The Wateringwell

Who needs a meteorologist when there’s folklore about virgin women controlling the rain? In Thai tradition, it’s believed that a virgin’s unique purity can influence the skies themselves. According to the tale, the rain will pour down shortly after if a virgin woman bathes in a river during a drought. And if the weather’s already too wet for your liking, the same mystical power can stop the rain in its tracks.

Want sunny skies for your big day? The quirky ritual suggests gifting a virgin some lemongrass and asking her to plant it in the ground—a custom called "ปักตะไคร้" (pronounced pak ta-krai), which supposedly has the power to halt rain.

This age-old belief highlights the cultural reverence for purity and the special roles women play in Thai folklore. As a source of spiritual strength, Virginity brings a whole new meaning to being a “force of nature” in Thailand!

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Kanika & Steve’s Story

Kanika and Steve left behind their life in Charlotte, NC, and Columbia, SC, to start a new adventure in Thailand. Steve, a retired Army veteran, and Kanika, who works in banking, had always loved travel and ran King and Queen Getaways, a booking company specializing in dream vacations to the Caribbean and Mexico. Moving to Bangkok was a leap, but one they were ready to make.

Exploring Bangkok: Their Favorite Spots

  • 7/11 Stops: This convenient store is their go-to for snacks and essentials—it’s a simple pleasure that’s quickly become a daily ritual.

  • Bangkok’s Malls: They love the lively atmosphere, people-watching, and the chance to window shop in Bangkok’s many malls.

  • Staycations in Style: Kanika and Steve have a knack for finding luxury stays under $50, turning Bangkok’s five-star hotels into budget-friendly weekend getaways.

A highlight so far has been visiting Pattaya’s Big Buddha and the Sanctuary of Truth. The all-wooden Sanctuary, with its intricate carvings and spiritual feel, was awe-inspiring, giving them a deep connection to Thai culture.

Reflecting on their move, they wish they’d packed more casual clothes, Southern cooking essentials, and prepared for Bangkok’s traffic. Learning Thai is also on their list to make day-to-day life even smoother.

With Steve’s military pension and VA benefits, they comfortably sustain their lifestyle in Bangkok. Running King and Queen Getaways remotely, they’re soaking up their new home’s beauty—finding adventure and meaning in every little corner, whether it’s a luxury hotel stay or a 7/11 snack run.

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭

Isaan, or Northeastern Thailand, has a reputation for bringing the heat, thanks to its unique culture, climate, and culinary influences.

Source: deSIAMCuisine (Thailand) Co Ltd

Here’s why Isaan cuisine is often the spiciest in Thailand

  • Chili Love Runs Deep: Isaan dishes are rooted in a love for bold flavors, and chilis are an essential part of that. Isaan locals tend to have a higher tolerance (and appreciation!) for spiciness, so adding extra chilies is standard. Fresh, dried, and roasted chilis find their way into nearly every dish, from soups to salads.

  • Lao Influence: Isaan shares cultural and culinary traditions with Laos, where spicy food is also a staple. Traditional Lao flavors emphasize spice and tang, which Isaan cuisine has wholeheartedly embraced, making dishes like som tam (papaya salad) and larb (minced meat salad) hot and sour essentials.

  • Hot Climate: The region’s tropical climate plays a role as well. Eating spicy foods in hot weather is thought to help cool the body through sweating, so the locals naturally favor hot, punchy flavors to balance the heat.

  • Simple, Bold Ingredients: Isaan food often relies on a handful of local ingredients like fresh herbs, fish sauce, and lime, which are all intensified by a good kick of chili. These minimal ingredients are used in creative ways to amplify the flavors, with spice being an easy and popular way to add depth to otherwise simple dishes.

  • Community and Sharing Culture: In Isaan, meals are typically shared with friends and family, and each person’s spice tolerance is usually high. So, dishes are made with the expectation that everyone enjoys the heat. This communal approach to eating has cemented spicy flavors as a cornerstone of Isaan’s food culture.

If you’re brave enough to take on the heat, here are a few must-try dishes that define the region’s fiery cuisine.

  1. Som Tam (Papaya Salad): Probably the most iconic Isaan dish, Som Tam is a refreshing green papaya salad that’s both spicy and tangy. Pounded with chilies, lime, garlic, and fish sauce, this salad can include fermented crab or salty, dried shrimp, adding extra layers of flavor.

  2. Larb Moo (Spicy Minced Pork Salad): This dish brings heat and flavor with minced pork tossed in lime juice, chili flakes, fish sauce, and toasted rice powder, then topped with mint leaves. Usually eaten with sticky rice, it’s savory and bold with a bit of crunch, and is a favorite in Isaan gatherings.

  3. Gai Yang (Grilled Chicken): Marinated in garlic, cilantro roots, and pepper, then grilled over charcoal, Gai Yang pairs perfectly with spicy dipping sauces and sticky rice. It’s all about the flavorful marination and smoky grilling—simple, yet packed with depth.

  4. Nam Tok Moo (Waterfall Pork Salad): Named for the “waterfall” of juices that come off the meat as it’s grilled, Nam Tok Moo is similar to larb but uses slices of grilled pork instead of minced meat. Mixed with chili, lime, fish sauce, and mint, it’s a tender and spicy treat.

  5. Tom Saap (Spicy and Sour Soup): Isaan’s answer to spicy soup, Tom Saap is a pork bone soup with a tangy kick. Loaded with fresh chilies, herbs, galangal, and lemongrass, it’s incredibly aromatic and perfect for those who love a comforting, spicy broth.

For Isaan locals, the spice level is all part of the experience—so if you’re new to Isaan cuisine, don’t hesitate to ask for a milder version!
