Fun Fact

Ever wondered why Thai people have such unique, quirky nicknames?

It’s more than just a shortcut to their often long and elaborate full names—it’s a tradition steeped in history, culture, and even a little superstition.

In Thailand, everyone gets two names at birth: a full, official name and a nickname. But unlike in other cultures, nicknames aren’t just short versions of their real names—they’re chosen first, sometimes even before the baby’s official name is decided! The full name is mostly reserved for formal occasions, like official documents or introductions, while the nickname is what friends, family, and coworkers will use. It’s not uncommon for someone to go years without anyone outside of HR knowing their full name.

In the old days, babies were given names based on their birth order or physical traits. Think names like "Big," "Small," "Fat," or "Thin." Later, desirable traits like "Gold" or "Strong" became popular choices, adding a bit of aspiration to the mix.

During the Ayutthaya era, giving a child an unflattering nickname like Pig, Dog, or Fat was traditionally believed to ward off bad spirits, making the baby less appealing to them. Even today, it’s common practice to avoid openly complimenting a baby’s beauty or cuteness, all in the name of keeping those mischievous spirits at bay.

Today, nicknames range from traditional to trendy. Some parents choose foreign words like “Milk” or “Bank,” while others consult monks or astrologers for luck. Even Thai last names are unique—it is uncommon for two families from different bloodlines to share the same one.

Whether traditional, random, or trendy, nicknames are a fun and meaningful part of Thai culture, reflecting individuality and a little superstition.

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Carlos’s Story

Carlos, originally from Spain, moved to Bangkok to expand his tech startup. After years of working in Madrid's hustle, he was ready for a change and sought the balance of an affordable yet dynamic city. His first impressions of Bangkok were a mix of excitement and surprise, especially seeing the vibrant night markets and street food culture that Madrid didn’t offer.

Carlos settled in the Ari neighborhood, appreciating its mix of local charm and trendy cafes. His favorite spots include a hidden speakeasy bar, Tep Bar, where he enjoys live Thai music. The biggest challenge for Carlos was adjusting to the humidity, which was unlike anything he had experienced before. But after finding the right balance with indoor and outdoor activities, he embraced Bangkok’s heat and learned to adapt.

The most memorable moment for Carlos was his first Thai New Year or Songkran. The city-wide water festival was an unexpected thrill, and he loved how strangers became friends in the joy and chaos of the celebration. For Carlos, Bangkok has become a place where he’s not only growing his business but also making lifelong memories.

Why is Ayutthaya referred to as the "Venice of the East"?

Source: Introducing Bangkok

The city was once known as the “Venice of the East” presumably by European visitors who began arriving in the mid-seventeenth century. It was the former royal capital of Siam from the mid-fourteenth century until the late eighteenth century.

Ayutthaya was strategically built at the confluence of three rivers: the Chao Phraya, the Lopburi, and the Pa Sak. These waterways served as natural defenses, trade routes, and essential infrastructure for transportation and commerce.

Exploring Ayutthaya’s Treasures

Today, Ayutthaya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering visitors a chance to walk through history. Among the must-visit landmarks are:
