Fun Fact
One big myth about Thailand is that you can bargain for everything.
Source: The Island Drum
Sure, in local markets like Chatuchak, a bit of haggling can work—just don’t expect to slash prices in half, especially when items such as fake Ray-Bans are already very low.
A polite "Lod dai mai?" (meaning "Can you discount?") might get you a little off, but don’t push it.
And as for malls? Bargaining is mostly a no-go, except maybe at spots like MBK or Pantip Plaza. Be respectful and keep it fair!

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️
Myles Simms-Aur’s Story
Myles Simms-Aur’s story is about embracing change and chasing new horizons. Back in Maryland, he worked a steady IT job and had a comfortable apartment and a car, but life felt predictable. The rural landscape of his hometown wasn’t quite the right fit for a young 25-year-old seeking excitement.
Longing for more than the routine, he dreamed of living abroad and began exploring solo trips to Portugal, Spain, Dubai, Mexico, and Brazil. These adventures gave him a taste of new experiences and proved he could adapt to life outside the U.S. Eventually, Myles made a bold decision: he resigned from his job, let his lease expire, and booked a one-way ticket to Thailand.
In Bangkok, Myles found his groove. Terminal 21, especially the restaurant Ponn, quickly became a favorite spot. For nightlife, Flamenco Bangkok is his go-to rooftop bar, offering lively music and a social atmosphere—perfect even for a non-drinker like him. And when he’s looking for fun with friends, Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl at Siam Paragon is his hangout for bowling nights.
His most memorable moment in Thailand was his first week in Thailand, sitting outdoors at a restaurant when a little lizard darted across his table —That’s when reality kicked in - that he is actually in Thailand.
Looking back, he wishes he’d been more prepared for the Thai heat and humidity. Even with the awareness, nothing quite prepared him for that first sweltering blast of air, leading him to carry a portable fan everywhere.
Now, he balances life in Bangkok with his studies, utilizing his U.S. veteran benefits to pursue a degree in cybersecurity online. While he saved up before moving, he’s also using his stipend as he adjusts to this new chapter in Southeast Asia.
For Myles, it’s been a journey of discovery, adaptation, and finding joy in the unexpected.
Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭
Before Bangkok, Ayutthaya reigned as the capital of Thailand for over 400 years, and it was a city of splendor and significance.
Source: TheTravel
Founded in 1350 by King Uthong, Ayutthaya was strategically located along the Chao Phraya River, making it a key trade center in Southeast Asia. Traders from Portugal, Japan, China, and even France flocked to its thriving markets, drawn by the city’s prosperity. With grand palaces, temples, and bustling marketplaces, Ayutthaya became a cultural melting pot, blending Thai traditions with influences from across the globe.

Sadly, in 1767, Ayutthaya’s golden era came to an end when it was invaded and destroyed by the Burmese army. The city was left in ruins, its temples burned, and the kingdom was brought to its knees. But from these ashes, a new chapter began. King Taksin led the movement to reestablish Thai unity, and soon, King Rama I founded Bangkok as the new capital in 1782. While Ayutthaya’s reign ended, its historical essence lingers in the form of ancient temple ruins and stupas. It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage site—a reminder of Thailand’s glorious past, just a day trip from modern-day Bangkok.
