Rich’s Story
Rich’s story is one of adventure and travel. Originally from Canada, his first experience in Asia was in 1995 when he moved to the Philippines for six months—and ended up staying for years. Since then, Asia has become his home, with most of his time spent in Hong Kong, where his wife is from. In 2023, Rich and his wife decided to explore Thailand more deeply. They started in Koh Samui, traveled to Phuket, and are now settled in Bangkok.
Rich’s top favorite spots in Bangkok include the endless sushi spots in the Thong Lor and Phrom Phong areas. For weekend adventures, Chatuchak Market has caught his attention—its sheer size and authentic Thai finds are hard to beat. He’s also found his go-to spot for a delicious meal: Boon Tong Kiat Singapore Chicken Rice in Thong Lor, where he claims it’s the best chicken rice he's ever tasted, with staff as warm as the food.
Rich’s work life? He’s built a business over the past 29 years that now runs itself, allowing him the freedom to travel and explore at his own pace. So far, Thailand is one more chapter in his ongoing journey across Asia.

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭
The History of Thai Greeting “Wai”
The "Wai" is the traditional Thai greeting, and its origins are deeply rooted in Thai culture and Buddhist traditions.
Source: Slumber Party Hostels
The gesture, made by pressing one's palms together in a prayer-like position while bowing the head slightly, symbolizes respect, humility, and good manners. Historically, it evolved as a sign of peace, showing that neither person held weapons. The "Wai" is believed to have originated from Indian cultural and religious practices, particularly the Anjali Mudra, used in Hinduism and Buddhism as a gesture of reverence and salutation.
Over time, the Wai has become a fundamental part of Thai social etiquette, used in various contexts such as greetings, farewells, apologies, and expressions of gratitude. The height at which the hands are placed during the Wai indicates the level of respect given, with higher positions reserved for monks, elders, and royalty.
Today, the Wai continues to reflect Thailand's emphasis on respect, hierarchy, and politeness.
