The Hunger Games Salute: Rebellion IRL

Source: Thaiger

Straight out of The Hunger Games, the three-fingered salute became a symbol of protest in Thailand against military rule. Borrowed from the movie’s fight against oppression, it united anti-coup demonstrators—until authorities banned it, along with gatherings of more than five people. Who knew a simple hand gesture could cause such a stir? District 12 vibes, anyone?

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭

Thailand National Flower - Ratchaphruek

Source: Flowers in Thailand

The Ratchaphruek, Thailand's national flower, is a fascinating symbol of cultural and natural beauty with a rich and colorful history. Officially designated as the national flower in October 2001, this Golden Shower Tree boasts vibrant yellow blossoms that cascade like raindrops, creating stunning natural displays across Thailand and several other Asian countries.

The flower's name itself is deeply meaningful - "ratchaphruek" translates to "royal tree", which is particularly significant given its connection to the beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Yellow, the color associated with Monday (the King's birth day), represents glory, harmony, and unity. In Buddhism, the predominant religion in Thailand, yellow also holds spiritual importance.

Interestingly, the Ratchaphruek has some unique characteristics. During its blooming season from February to May, the trees dramatically shed their leaves, allowing the brilliant yellow flowers to create breathtaking landscapes along roadsides and in the countryside. Nature lovers will appreciate that these trees are not just beautiful but also ecologically important - they serve as a food source for tropical carpenter bees, butterflies, and even golden jackals.

Beyond Thailand, the Ratchaphruek has cultural significance in other countries too. In Kerala, India, it's the state flower and plays a role in sacred rituals. In Laos, it's associated with the New Year and is believed to attract good fortune. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it's even known as the "disease killer" for its potential medicinal properties.

A truly remarkable flower that represents so much more than just natural beauty!
