Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Katrin’s Story

Katrin's journey began as a 2D/3D artist for a real estate company in Eastern Europe, where she felt unfulfilled with her work and lifestyle. Craving change, she and her partner, Simeon, made the leap to Thailand in search of a better life.

Now a freelance 3D artist, Katrin enjoys the quieter side of life but has a few favorite spots, including Lava restaurant for its atmosphere, Iconsiam for the shops and food court, and BKK Social Club at the Four Seasons Hotel for its stunning garden and chic drinks.

Her most memorable moment was a trip to Krabi, where she and Simeon navigated a muddy, steep jungle road on a motorcycle. The destination was a café on a hill owned by a sweet local couple who built it by hand. Overlooking a 360-degree view of the jungle, mountains, and sea, the café offered a moment of awe-inspiring beauty that Katrin will never forget. It was a magical experience, one she is eager to return to.

Reflecting on her time in Thailand, Katrin wishes she’d known more about Thai culture beforehand. She quickly learned that respect and politeness are crucial, and what might be acceptable in her home country may not be in Thailand. Her advice? Do your research and respect the locals and their customs—after all, you’re a guest in their country.

Why is durian named the ‘King of Fruits”?

Source: draxe.com

Durian is called the “King of Fruits” not only because of its imposing appearance with spiky, armored skin but also for its rich history and unique flavor. In Thailand, durian is celebrated for its creamy, custard-like texture and sweet, savory taste.

Its reputation dates back centuries, to when it was enjoyed by Thai royalty. Durians symbolize indulgence and are featured in festivals and feasts nationwide. Locals appreciate the depth of flavor and the distinctive aroma, which signals peak ripeness.

However, for many foreigners, it’s the smell that makes durian a challenge. The fruit has a strong, almost pungent aroma, often compared to onions, turpentine, or even gasoline. The funny thing is that locals usually don’t smell this “onion” scent at all and are confused by foreigners’ reactions to it.

It’s so powerful that it’s banned in many hotels and public transport! While locals find the aroma part of its charm, foreigners might need time to warm up to it. But once they do, durian's complex, luxurious flavor can be an unforgettable experience!

The love for durian in Thailand runs deep, with different varieties prized for their unique tastes and textures. From markets to dessert menus, durian is everywhere during its season, cementing its status as a truly iconic Thai fruit.
