Charms in Taxis: A Little Extra Protection on the Road

Source: Migrationology.com

Hop into a taxi in Bangkok, and you’ll likely notice something a bit different—a collection of small charms and amulets hanging from the rear-view mirror or tucked around the dashboard. These aren’t just decorative; they serve a special purpose. In a city where taxis are everywhere (seriously, there’s one on nearly every corner), these charms are believed to protect both the driver and passengers from accidents.

In Thai culture, many believe that accidents can be caused by bad karma from previous lives. Since taxi drivers can't control the karma of their passengers, they turn to these charms for a little extra protection. The amulets are thought to counteract any bad luck that passengers might bring with them, helping to keep everyone safe on the road. So next time you’re in a Bangkok taxi, take a moment to appreciate these small but significant symbols—they’re not just for show, but a reflection of deep-rooted Thai beliefs in karma and protection.

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Ava’s Story

Meet Ava, a former baker and sales manager from China who decided to shake up her life and move to Bangkok, trading stress for serenity. She started out by running a hostel in Bangkok with her bestfriend. Working at the hostel solidified her love for the city's laid-back vibe and warm-hearted locals. Now, as a tour guide, Ava introduces tourists to the wonders of Bangkok through social media, highlighting the city's food, culture, and hidden gems. Her favorite spots include the Chao Phraya River at night, the bustling Chatuchak Weekend Market, and the sacred Erawan Shrine.

One of Ava's most memorable experiences in Bangkok happened late one night after work. Around 3 a.m., her motorcycle ran out of fuel, leaving her stranded 4 kilometers from the nearest gas station. When she felt stuck, a group of local youths approached and generously shared fuel from their bikes, ensuring she could reach the station. Their kindness left a deep impression on Ava, reminding her that the true beauty of Bangkok lies not just in its vibrant culture but in the genuine warmth of its people.

Acknowledgments

Ava's journey in Bangkok was deeply influenced by her best friend, who ran the hostel with her. Despite Ava's initial reluctance to learn English, her friend encouraged her to pursue the language, even going as far as paying for her tuition to study English in Bangkok. Their friendship was marked by support and resilience; whenever Ava faced challenges, her best friend was there to help. Despite the occasional disagreements, they always managed to resolve them through open communication. Ava feels incredibly fortunate to have such a supportive friend and wants to express her profound gratitude.
