Today’s Expat Story 🗺️
James’s Story
James's journey to Thailand started after earning his degree in International Agribusiness at the University of California. Seeking adventure and opportunity, he moved to Thailand, where he’s now spent 15 years. His biggest challenge was moving to Bangkok without knowing anyone and figuring things out on his own.
Professionally, James works for an American tax consultancy firm, a job that keeps him busy from February through June, but the flexibility later in the year allows him to explore Thailand and beyond.
Settling in Bangkok, James found some favorite spots—Bangkok Mojo for its live music, Battlefield Bangkok for board games with friends, and the lush escape of Benjakitti Forest Park.
His most memorable experience? The Phi Ta khon Festival in Loei Province. This lively celebration, with its colorful masks, parades, fireworks, and friendly locals, gave James a cultural experience like no other. He describes it as the most unforgettable festival he's ever attended, both in Thailand and the world.

Khao San Road started as a humble street known for its rice trade
Source: TimeOut
Khao San Road, originally a quiet rice market in the late 19th century, has evolved into one of Bangkok’s most vibrant backpacker districts. The name "Khao San" translates to "milled rice," reflecting its origins, but by the 1980s, budget travelers began flocking to the area for cheap accommodations, transforming it into a global hotspot.
Today, Khao San is a bustling street filled with hostels, quirky shops, street food stalls, bars, and nightclubs. By day, you can browse vendors selling everything from handmade crafts to fake IDs, while at night, the street comes alive with music, dancing, and lively street performances.
Khao San is not just about the party scene; it’s also a key travel hub for those heading to other destinations in Thailand. From here, buses leave daily for Chiang Mai in the north, islands like Koh Phangan in the south, and even neighboring countries such as Cambodia and Laos.
Aside from the energetic nightlife, Khao San has historical gems nearby, like the Wat Chana Songkram temple and the Grand Palace, just a short walk away.

The street has also been a hub for Songkran celebrations, turning into a massive water fight during Thailand’s New Year festivities. Despite attempts by the Bangkok authorities to regulate vendors, Khao San Road retains its spirited and rebellious charm, making it a must-visit destination for travelers looking to experience Bangkok’s vibrant mix of culture, history, and nightlife.
