Fun Fact
Did you know that before 2010 it used to be common to see elephants roaming the streets in Bangkok? 🐘
These majestic creatures were often brought into the city by their mahouts (elephant handlers) to beg for food and money from tourists and locals alike. This practice, while culturally significant, raised serious concerns about animal welfare and public safety.
The urban environment was harsh on elephants, causing health issues from traffic, pollution, and hard surfaces. Elephants in busy city streets posed dangers, especially when startled by traffic noises.
By 2010, regulations were put in place to ban elephants from city streets, aiming to protect both the animals and the public. And many elephants were relocated to sanctuaries where they could live healthier, more natural lives.
Today, elephants are rarely seen in Bangkok, with a stronger focus on ethical tourism and conservation. You can now enjoy these magnificent creatures in sanctuaries across Thailand, where their welfare is a priority.

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️
Nicholas’s Story
Nicholas's journey to Bangkok was driven by a mix of professional ambition and personal curiosity. He was drawn to the opportunity to pursue a job he was passionate about while immersing himself in a completely new environment.
Additionally, Bangkok held a special place in his heart as the hometown of his girlfriend, adding a layer of personal significance to his relocation. His first impressions of Bangkok were of a city unlike any other in Europe—vibrant, chaotic, and endlessly fascinating. However, the language barrier initially posed a significant challenge, limiting his ability to connect with locals.
Adapting to the local culture and lifestyle was a gradual process for Nicholas, greatly facilitated by his girlfriend's extensive knowledge of the city. Her guidance helped him understand the nuances of Thai culture and navigate daily life in Bangkok. Nicholas advises fellow expats to embrace the move with an open mind and readiness to learn, as the experience is unlike anything they might have known before.
The most rewarding aspects of his expat experience include meeting diverse people, savoring delicious Thai cuisine, and enjoying a more affordable lifestyle compared to Western countries. For Nicholas, each day in Bangkok brings new discoveries and less financial stress, making the leap well worth it.
