Fun Fact

Did you know that there is a significant number of Thai-Chinese people in Thailand?

In 2012, the Thai Chinese, also known as Sino-Thais, were the largest minority in Thailand, with 7-10 million people, making up 11-14% of the population. This community, the oldest and most integrated overseas Chinese group, dates back to the 1100s. Over half trace their roots to Chaoshan, reflected in the widespread Teochew dialect.

For over 200 years, Thai Chinese have deeply influenced Thai culture and leadership. The Chakri dynasty, founded by King Rama I, includes Chinese ancestry, as did King Taksin of Thonburi. Many Thai Chinese have intermarried with native Thais, blending into society and often identifying solely as Thai.

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Pierre’s Story

When Pierre was hired by Agoda, it was a perfect fit for his career and his wife, an epidemiologist eager to work in the region. So, off to Bangkok, they went!

Stepping into Bangkok was a whirlwind of friendly faces, endless activities, and affordable living compared to Europe. The city's energy is palpable, with so much to see and do. But adjusting to the pollution, relentless heat, and lack of sidewalks was tough. The chaotic traffic was another major hurdle.

Pierre has been in Bangkok for about a year and is still adapting. He's followed Instagram accounts to discover new spots and connect with locals and long-term expats who share invaluable tips. It’s a continuous adventure.

For other expats moving to Bangkok, Pierre suggests:

  • Choosing Your Neighborhood Wisely: Your social life will revolve around where you live, and being near the BTS or MRT makes a huge difference.

  • Exploring Beyond the Obvious: Bangkok has hidden gems beyond bars and fancy restaurants.

  • Reaching Out: People are welcoming, but you need to get comfortable putting yourself out there.

  • Getting Health Insurance: It’s essential for peace of mind.

The most rewarding part for Pierre? The shift from feeling like a tourist to actually living in Bangkok. It’s the growing sense of belonging that makes it all worth it.
