Fun Fact
Sharing is caring. It is common for people to share food.
What do you mean by sharing food?
Well, sharing food is a deeply ingrained cultural practice. When dining, it is common for people to order various dishes to share with everyone at the table, creating a communal and interactive eating experience.
This practice allows everyone to taste a range of flavors and dishes, enhancing the dining experience and showcasing the diversity of Thai cuisine.
Everyone usually has their own plate of rice. The other dishes are placed in the center of the table, and everyone helps themselves using communal utensils. It is polite to take small portions to ensure everyone gets a chance to try each dish. The oldest or most senior person at the table often starts the meal, setting an example for others to follow.
Sharing food is more than just a dining preference in Thailand; it is a way to connect and celebrate with friends and family.
This is also why hotpots are so popular in Thailand. Cooking and eating together creates a fun and warm experience for everyone to enjoy.
So next time you’re in Thailand, embrace the local customs and enjoy the communal feast!

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️
Paris’s Story
Paris decided to move to Bangkok after many visits and having a dear friend living there. As a female solo traveler, she needed affordability, safety, culture, and great food—Bangkok ticked all those boxes, especially once she found her perfect apartment! Her cozy high-rise flat offered stunning city views at a fraction of her previous rent, complete with a swimming pool where she’d enjoy coffee while soaking in the breathtaking skyline. Watching the sunrise and sunset from her apartment turned her into a morning person, a change she embraced wholeheartedly.
Bangkok didn’t just become Paris's home; it was where she grew, discovered new passions, and forged lifelong memories, including making a new best friend. The city blends ancient traditions with modern flair and serves as an excellent base for work and travel to some of the world's most beautiful islands. Having spent time in Thailand before, she knew it was safe, the people were kind, and the food was phenomenal.
Her first impressions were of how much value she got for so little, which sometimes made her feel guilty. She believes recognizing this and giving back where possible makes a huge difference. The biggest challenge was the language barrier; despite feeling embarrassed, she found that the locals highly appreciated her efforts.
Paris adapted by leaning into the local culture and lifestyle, appreciating Thai culture's richness and hospitality. Her tips for other expats include ensuring you have air conditioning if you're not used to the heat, downloading the Grab app for convenience, and finding a local friend to help you navigate the city.
The most rewarding part of Paris’s expat experience has been having a place to call home where she feels safe, eats amazing food, travels freely, and never gets bored. Bangkok continuously surprises her with its diverse areas and endless activities, making it a city that always has something new to offer.
Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭
Why Elephants Are the Symbol of Thailand?
Elephants hold a special place in Thai culture and history, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and prosperity.
Here’s why these majestic creatures are considered a symbol of Thailand:
Cultural Significance
Historical Importance
Elephants have been integral to Thai history for centuries. They were used in warfare, particularly during the Ayutthaya period, when war elephants played crucial roles in battles against invaders. Imagine massive elephants charging into battle—it's no wonder they became a symbol of strength!
Royal Symbolism
The white elephant is particularly revered. Associated with royalty, Thai kings kept these elephants, symbolizing divine favor and legitimacy. This tradition continues today, with white elephants holding ceremonial significance.
Religious and Mythological Roles
Buddhist Symbolism
In Buddhism, the predominant religion in Thailand, elephants are considered sacred. The Buddha is said to have been a white elephant in one of his previous lives. This connection enhances their status as symbols of peace and power.
Mythology
Elephants are prominent in Thai mythology and folklore. Erawan, a multi-headed elephant, serves as the mount of the god Indra. This celestial association further elevates the elephant's symbolic status.
Economic and Ecological Impact
Economic Contributions
Historically, elephants were used in logging and heavy labor due to their immense strength. Their practical utility made them valuable assets in Thailand’s economic development, especially before modern machinery.
Tourism
Today, elephants are a significant draw for tourists. Elephant sanctuaries and conservation programs attract visitors worldwide, boosting the economy and promoting conservation efforts.
Modern Symbolism
National Emblem
Elephants appear on various Thai emblems, including past national flags, currency, and government insignia. This consistent presence underscores their enduring significance in Thai identity.
Conservation Efforts
In contemporary times, there's a strong focus on elephant conservation due to declining numbers from habitat loss and poaching. This modern conservation ethos reinforces their importance as national treasures to be protected.
In summary, elephants are deeply woven into Thailand's cultural, religious, and historical fabric. Their significance spans ancient warfare to modern conservation, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and national pride. Thailand's reverence for elephants continues to thrive, highlighting their importance in both the past and present.
