Fun Fact

One of the biggest misconceptions about Thai cuisine is that every dish is a fiery challenge for your taste buds.

Source: POPSUGAR

While Thailand is renowned for its spicy delights like som tam (papaya salad), tom yum (spicy soup), and pad kra pao (spicy basil stir-fry), the truth is not all Thai food is spicy. The beauty of Thai cuisine lies in its balance—sweet, sour, salty, and sometimes spicy.

And here’s a tip: if you’re not into spice but want to try dishes that are usually made spicy, you can always ask the restaurant staff to adjust the heat level.

  • Not Spicy = “Mai phed Krub/Kha" (ไม่เผ็ดครับ/ค่ะ)

  • Little bit spicy = "Phed nit noy Krub/Kha" (เผ็ดนิดหน่อยครับ/ค่ะ)

  • Normal spicy level = "Phed bpokati Krub/Kha" (เผ็ดปกติครับ/ค่ะ)

  • Spicy = "Phed Krub/Kha" (เผ็ดครับ/ค่ะ)

  • Very spicy = "Phed mak mak Krub/Kha" (เผ็ดมากๆครับ/ค่ะ)

Dishes like pad see ew (stir-fried noodles) and khao man gai (chicken rice) offer all the flavors without the burn. (Other non spicy dishes)

So, whether you’re a spice lover or prefer it mild, a perfect Thai dish is waiting for you!

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Shaion’s Story

Shaion, a Bangladeshi national with a degree from Monash University in Australia, had built a successful career in multinational companies in South Asia. However, he felt confined within the region and longed to explore new opportunities in Southeast Asia. While Singapore tempted him, its intense work culture deterred him. Instead, he chose Thailand, seeking a balance between personal and professional life.

Professionally, Shaion started as a Project Manager at an edtech startup in Bangkok, later becoming the SEA director for an adtech company. Currently, he is the head of global partnership at a multinational fintech company.

Upon moving to Bangkok, Shaion quickly fell in love with the city’s vibrant spots. The Commons Thonglor became his go-to place for meeting friends over great food and craft beers. He enjoyed exploring the hidden gems in the Thonglor area, often discovered through casual strolls. The Phrom Phong area also became a favorite, with its mix of dining, movies, and running spots. Emquartier and Emporium were his comfort zones, located near Benchasiri Park. He also loved the Suphan Alley area, opposite Wat Arun and along the Chao Phraya River, particularly for the literature festivals at Museum Siam and the unique cafes and bars in the vicinity.

One of his most memorable experiences in Thailand was the generosity of the Thai people. He recalls a heartwarming incident in Chiang Mai, where an elderly landlady noticed his interest in her guava tree and generously offered him fresh guavas. This act of kindness left a lasting impression on him.

Reflecting on his move, Shaion wishes he had learned and picked up some Thai language skills before arriving. He finds life in Bangkok relatively easy, with affordable living costs and a straightforward lifestyle. However, he advises others to have realistic expectations, particularly regarding English communication and government procedures for the extension of their work or dependent visas.

He advises others planning a long-term stay to research condo rentals near the BTS and explore non-tourist areas for cheaper and more delicious food. He warns against staying in the Asoke and NaNa areas, which he feels don’t reflect Bangkok's true essence. He also emphasizes the importance of having the right qualifications and transferable skills to secure a white-collar job in Thailand.

For those who can embrace the quirks and cultural differences, he believes Thailand offers a fantastic experience.

Thailand’s Military Drafting System

Mandatory & The Lottery Process

Source: Aljazeera.com

Thailand’s military draft system is rooted in mandatory conscription, requiring all Thai men aged 21 to participate. This ensures a strong, ready military force, crucial for national defense. The draft includes a unique lottery system where men draw cards—black for exemption and red for mandatory two-year service. This adds an element of suspense, making the event significant in young Thai men's lives.

Exemptions and Alternatives
Those who complete military training programs during education, like the Territorial Defense program, can be exempted or have reduced service terms. These programs allow young men to fulfill obligations early and avoid the draft later.

Duration of Service
The service duration for those who draw a red card is typically two years, though it can vary based on previous training or educational qualifications. University graduates might serve shorter terms.

Cultural Significance
The lottery and conscription process is more than bureaucratic; it’s a cultural event in Thailand. Families and communities gather to support participants, marking a young man’s transition into adulthood and national service.

Social and Economic Impacts
The draft impacts young men socially and economically, as they must temporarily set aside personal pursuits. However, it also provides valuable skills, discipline, and national pride.

Are transgenders & ladyboys exempted?

Source: Dailymail.co.uk

In Thailand, transgender individuals and ladyboys are still required to participate in the military draft. To get the exemption certificate, since it is impossible to change the gender stated on their birth certificate, they are required to get a physical examination at the drafting center, a doctor's certificate proving they are what is known locally as a 'type 2' woman and other paperwork to prove that they are unfit for military service.

Thailand’s military drafting system, combining conscription and a lottery, reflects the country’s commitment to national defense while addressing individual circumstances, including the unique considerations for transgender individuals. The system is deeply embedded in Thai culture, symbolizing a young man’s duty to his country and his transition into adulthood.
