Fun Fact

Not that kind of “Guava.”

The term "farang" may seem racist; however, it is certainly not the case.

In Thailand, the term “farang” is like calling someone a "foreigner," especially if they're from the West.

In Thai, "farang" (ฝรั่ง) means both guava and foreigner. If you can read Thai, you've probably noticed they’re spelled the same!

Legend has it that guavas were named "farang" because their white flesh resembles the skin of Europeans. But the more likely story is that Portuguese traders brought the fruit to Thailand.

The formal word for foreigner is “Chao Tharg-Chaart” (ชาวต่างชาติ). The direct translation is ‘person from a different nation.’

Simeon’s Story

From a tourist to an expat…

In 2017, Simeon fell in love with Thailand. The warm hospitality, vibrant energy of Bangkok, and the city's rapid pace were irresistible. Driven by big dreams, he moved to Bangkok to expand his health and fitness business, eagerly anticipating the opening of his first location next month.

Transitioning from Hong Kong, Simeon thought he was prepared for Asian city life, but Bangkok offered a unique, beautiful chaos. Navigating cultural and language barriers, he found the locals' kindness made his adjustment smoother.

Initially living in Sukhumvit, Simeon soon moved to Nonthaburi for a more authentic Thai experience. Immersing himself in the culture through friendships, he gained a deep appreciation for his new home.

For those considering a move to Bangkok, Simeon advises spending a few months on a tourist visa first. Explore, live in local areas, and make local friends to set realistic expectations and ease the transition.

Reflecting on his journey, Simeon found the people, culture, weather, food, and opportunities in Thailand unparalleled. The quality of life and diverse social interactions made his experience extraordinary.

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭

How did Thailand Avoid the European Colonization?

Thailand (Previously known as Siam) managed to avoid colonization due to a combination of strategic diplomacy, modernization efforts, and geographical advantages. Here's a closer look at how they did it:

Strategic Diplomacy

Thailand’s ability to avoid colonization was largely due to the adept diplomatic strategies of its kings, particularly King Mongkut (Rama IV) and King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). They negotiated skillfully with both Britain and France, signing treaties and making concessions to keep both powers at bay. This delicate balance prevented any single European power from gaining enough influence to colonize Thailand.

King Mongkut (Rama IV) of Siam, born on 18th October 1804 and died on 1st October 1868, was the fourth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty. His reign, marked by significant modernization and diplomacy, positioned Siam to better engage with the Western world. Embracing Western innovations, he earned the nickname "The Father of Science and Technology" in Siam. Source: Wikipedia

King Chulalongkorn, also known as King Rama V, was the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri, ruling from 1st October 1868 until his death on 23rd October 1910. Born on 20 September 1853, he was the son of King Mongkut. Source: Wikipedia

Modernization Efforts

Thai rulers also pursued extensive modernization reforms. These included overhauling the administrative and legal systems, as well as modernizing the military with Western technology and practices. These efforts impressed Western powers and showcased Thailand’s capability to govern itself, which helped deter colonization.

Geographical Advantage

Thailand’s geographical location played a significant role in its ability to remain independent. Nestled between British-controlled Burma and French-controlled Indochina, Thailand served as a buffer state. Both Britain and France preferred to keep Thailand independent to avoid direct conflict over this strategically important region.

Cultural Adaptation

The Thai monarchy’s willingness to adopt Western customs and technologies further strengthened diplomatic ties with European nations. This cultural flexibility demonstrated Thailand’s openness to modernization, which helped maintain its sovereignty.

National Unity and Identity

A strong sense of national identity and unity was crucial in resisting foreign domination. The Thai monarchy fostered this unity, which was essential in maintaining the country’s independence against external threats.

External Support

Thailand also benefitted from support from other nations at crucial moments. For instance, during the Siamese-French War, British intervention pressured France to limit its actions, thereby helping preserve Thai independence.

Timing and Luck

Timing played a role as well. The period of European colonial ambitions coincided with Thailand’s efforts to modernize and strengthen its defenses. This fortunate timing allowed Thailand to avoid colonization that affected its neighbors.

In essence, Thailand avoided colonization due to strategic diplomacy, modernization efforts, geographical advantages, cultural adaptation, national unity, external support, and favorable timing.
