Fun Fact

The importance of someone’s head and feet in Thai culture

Source: APDSA Thailand

The Head: Sacred Ground

Heads are VIPs in Thai culture. Patting someone’s head, even affectionately, is incredibly rude in Thai culture. And when you pass by someone older or of higher status? Lower your head slightly to show respect. Fun fact: this extends to kids, too, as their "kwan" (spirit) is considered delicate.

Feet Stay Grounded

Feet may help you move, but in Thailand, they don’t get much respect. Never point your toes at someone or anything sacred – Buddha statues included! And crossing your legs with a foot aimed at someone? A total no-no. When visiting temples or homes, take your shoes off.

Today’s Expat Story 🗺️

Liam’s Story

Liam, an entrepreneur from Ireland, decided to move to Bangkok to take advantage of the city’s thriving startup ecosystem. The transition wasn’t easy - Liam had to adapt to the slower pace of business operations compared to Europe. However, the friendliness of the local business community helped him find his footing.

Liam’s go-to spot for networking is the Bangkok Startup Hub in Ekkamai, where he’s met other like-minded entrepreneurs. For a break from work, he enjoys visiting the lush Lumpini Park, where he can escape the city noise. Learning basic Thai phrases helped Liam connect better with locals, and he encourages new expats to learn a bit of the language to show respect and build friendships.

His most memorable moment was a trip to Ayutthaya with friends, during which he explored the ancient temples and learned about Thailand’s rich history. For Liam, Bangkok isn’t just a workplace; it’s become where he’s continuously learning and growing.

Father's Day in Thailand: A Celebration of Royal Tradition and Familial Respect

Source: Thaiger

In Thailand, Father's Day is uniquely celebrated on December 5th, which marks the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), who was deeply revered as the "Father of the Nation." This date carries profound significance that goes far beyond a typical holiday.

Royal Origins and National Significance

King Bhumibol was born on December 5th, 1927, and was widely respected as a compassionate monarch who dedicated his life to improving the lives of Thai people. After his passing in 2016, the day remains a national tribute to both biological fathers and the symbolic father figure of the nation.

Traditions and Celebrations

On this day, Thai families typically:

  • Wear yellow (the King's color and a symbol of Monday, his birth day)

  • Give their fathers or grandfathers small gifts

  • Perform special ceremonies honoring fathers

  • Many people wear yellow polo shirts with the royal crest

  • Children often present their fathers with traditional garlands of marigolds

Cultural Significance

The celebration reflects core Thai values of respect for elders, family unity, and national pride. Unlike many countries' Father's Day, the Thai version is deeply intertwined with national identity and royal history.

Families across Thailand use this day to express gratitude, love, and respect—not just to their personal fathers, but to the paternal figures who have guided both family and nation.
