Fun Fact

Why is October 14th a holiday? And why is this day so important?

October 14th is a significant holiday in Thailand known as "October 14 Memorial Day." It commemorates the popular uprising of October 14, 1973, which was a major turning point in Thai political history. On this day, a student-led protest calling for democratic reforms resulted in the overthrow of the military dictatorship. The event led to greater political freedom and a transition towards democracy. The uprising is remembered for its impact on Thailand's political landscape and the sacrifices made during the struggle for democracy.

Toda is also is a public holiday in Thailand in substitution for the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX), a day of reflection and remembrance. It’s a day for reflection, honoring the legacy of the beloved monarch. Expect some closures across the city—government offices, including the Land Department and DMV, will be shut, as will schools. While banks won’t be open, there’s an exception for branches in shopping malls, which will still be operating.

Today’s On the other side - Semi Local Story 🗺️

Nat’s Story

Nat’s story is about finding her way between two worlds—Thai and international. Growing up in Thailand, she is half-Thai and half-Chinese. Her upbringing was shaped by attending Bangkok Pattana School, an international school where most students were non-Thai. Immersed in a global environment, Nat felt at home with foreign friends but struggled to connect with Thai locals.

University life at ABAC was a jolt into Thai society, and for the first time, she found herself among mostly Thai classmates. Adjusting to Thai slang and social norms took time, leaving her feeling isolated. Many of her Thai classmates assumed she didn’t speak Thai fluently and treated her as an outsider, further deepening her sense of foreignness.

Nat then went to the UK to complete her Master's Degree. However, Nat’s turning point came after returning to Thailand from the UK, where she initially felt disconnected. Through taking her friends from aboard and partner around to explore Thailand, Nat rediscovered the beauty of the country. She fell in love with its vibrant culture, affordable lifestyle, and the wonderful people she met along the way.

Her favorite places in Thailand are SEEN Restaurant & Bar with its amazing food and stunning rooftop views, and Staneemeehoi Restaurant, where she had one of her most memorable experiences, laughing harder than ever with the warm staff. She also loves Koh Lipe for its peaceful, crystal-clear waters—a hidden gem in Thailand.

Though her journey in Thailand has been complex, Nat has come full circle, embracing her roots and working alongside Simeon as the writer of this very newsletter!

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭

On October 13th, Thailand commemorates the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, a day of deep national mourning and reflection. King Bhumibol, who reigned for 70 years, is highly revered for his immense contributions to the country, including his dedication to development projects, agriculture, and the welfare of the Thai people.

Across the country, people dress in black or white as symbols of mourning and respect. Temples hold special religious ceremonies where devotees make merit, offer food to monks, and recite prayers in his memory. Public spaces, government buildings, and homes display the late King’s portrait, often surrounded by floral tributes.

At Bangkok's Grand Palace, large crowds gather at the King’s memorial to pay their respects and reflect on his enduring legacy. Many participate in candlelight vigils, both in Bangkok and around the country. It’s a day marked by unity as the Thai people come together to remember a King who was often referred to as the “Father of the Nation.”

Additionally, many schools, government offices, and public institutions organize events to honor his memory, including exhibitions showcasing his life, his many accomplishments, and his tireless work to improve the lives of his citizens. While the day is solemn, it also serves as a reminder of King Bhumibol's positive influence on the country, and his guiding principles remain a source of inspiration for generations to come.
